minimum skills to tame?

I am currently at 56.4 taming (51.0 real) and the game tells me that I don't have the minimum skill required to tame polar bears, which according to more than one training guide I have looked up on the net, should only require 40 skill level. Also, I haven't gained a single time off failures on snow leopards and walruses. I don't believe this is correct. Also, i was not able to purchase animal lore from various vets and stable hands even though I have lots of skill cap room left and all skills are turned up. Any help would be appreciated, thanx!

The taming difficulties are based on 1999 era UO with one or two exceptions. It is not possible to gain from failures in any skill above 50. Simply find creatures to practice taming on that offer a reasonable difficulty level without being too difficult that you fail all the time.

To get an NPC to list the skills that they can teach you, simply use:
<name> teach
